I was excited to read in the news that the American automotive giant, Ford, is returning to F1. Their plan to make a comeback from the 2026 season is something that I am personally going to look forward to with anticipation. I understand their restoration was a consequence of the new engine changes that pave the way for a greener racing programme, which includes increased electrical power and 100% sustainable fuels.
This recent announcement has made me reflect on the racing history of Ford and more specifically their involvement in Le Mans ‘66, when the company finished in the top three places. The film focuses on the development of the GT40 and the partnership of American, Carroll Shelby and his British mechanical engineering driver friend, Ken Miles. It showcased the twists and turns and the series of engineering tweaks and adjustments, that were needed to bring about their success and highlighted that sometimes a smaller decision-making team is necessary to take the risks needed in order to make a successful product.
For those of you who are avid readers of my blogs will have caught on that I have been an enthusiastic keeper of classic Ford cars, for some years. I will therefore wait with expectation as to what their F1 engineering future will be.
