I am sure that we have all been present at an event when we have heard the words, “testing, testing.” spoken over a microphone, followed maybe by a tap or two with the fingers on the mic, either before a performance or an important announcement. Despite the sometimes excruciatingly piercing sound being projected from the speakers, the lesson to be learned is that 'testing, testing' is a very important and definitely a most significant part of understanding what and or how something is going to behave in reality.

In mechanical design and development, the actual 'testing, testing' process is now made up of many, many, often complex aspects of analysis. Through design engineering analysis techniques, we fundamentally have the ability to assess in the virtual world the system, process, and parts before we even consider committing to making something. With developing technologies, we can almost touch, feel, and handle the product in virtual reality before it even goes near the real-life user.

Despite all these engineering tools and methods, using the occasional tap on the mic and muttering “testing, testing” into it still has a place in giving us the assurance that the thing is actually working and ready to be used! “Testing, testing, 1, 2, 3”.
