Perfection - we all aim for it. But do you have to strive for it every day of your life? It can be quite tiring being a mechanical design engineer, believe me.
Anyone who is an engineer, or who has to live with one, will understand it is not simply the case that you become an engineer; it is more like the career chooses you. It is a way of life, and engineering embodies every aspect of your being and encompasses everything you do. For those of you who think the job simply comprises of a PC and CAD software, then please think again.
So, what does it take to be a design engineer, and what makes us tick? In a word, passion. Every day engineers sit at their desks and churn out CAD data, upon data, and when we have time off, many of us will turn our attention to our own private engineering hobbies. It is something that just can’t be switched on and off; unfortunately, as most of us live and breathe engineering.
In everyday situations, I find that I cannot simply say “that will do”. The persistence I have deep inside drives me forward to problem solve how something could be done better. The attention to detail and high levels of concentration and technical understanding can at times be very trying, but when a solution and a new way of doing things is discovered, it makes the long hours worthwhile.
Excellent CAD skills are obviously required to churn out the many CAD revisions required by our managers and clients alike, and these skills must constantly be refreshed to stay on top and abreast of functionality and software capabilities. Of course, it can be quite tricky if you don’t possess an embedded desire for perfection and a keen interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. But lucky for me, I do.
If you are seeking a design partner that strives for perfection, then look no further.
