Working with numerous design and development projects, as we have, over the 20 plus years that Sanstec Design has been operating, there have inevitably been a substantial number of clients that have required their original design files to be converted into another format. One way or another, depending on the existing data and where they want or more importantly, need to be, we have successfully problem-solved and aided them on their journey of conversion.
The complexity of the CAD conversion process is, of course, dependable on the given scenario. For example, a client may have a paper sketch or 2D drawing or PDF, which to proceed with a design and development project, needs changing into an electronic CAD file. This sounds simple enough, doesn’t it, but the concept is not often very straightforward.
When carrying out a CAD to CAD conversion, problems can occur when the functionality in the receiving CAD software differs to that in the legacy system. For the experienced CAD draughtsman they will know to check whether migrating data needs tweaking, and to ensure that complex features are checked for accuracy, so that it not only looks the same as the original but is built in the same way.
In order to check for inconsistencies and rectify errors a high attention to detail is required. This is more often than not, a painful process. Simpler, more universal components, such as a humble washer, should migrate to the new software intact, but a product with more complex features can be more problematic, especially when on the face of it, it looks completely the same. So it is important to dig deeper to ascertain that everything works as it should, behind the scenes, in order to assemble the product as required.
So why carry out data transfers if it is this difficult? Well, in some cases, clients have no choice, especially if the reason is a change of in-house software. If you need any support, we have experience and expertise in complex and simple and / or bulk conversions either inside or outside PDM systems. We can get your data successfully transferred, one way or another.
