Being a design engineer, sometimes people assume that it is just me and my CAD software, churning design after design in 3D, but it is simply not true. Yes, providing clients with drawings is a big part of what my company Sanstec Design provides, but that is not the whole story. You might need to contact a mechanical design engineer like myself for a number of reasons.
So apart from the obvious, developing conceptual and detailed designs in CAD, we have worked with marketers to develop product concept and specifications to meet customer’s needs. Or further along the development cycle, we have been involved with improving existing product designs and components. Sometimes there are general or functional design problems and we are asked to find solutions to these product or user related issues.
Engineers are used to keep records of the design and alterations, known as the form, fit and function, plus a bill of materials which helps keep track of the financial outlay. We can analyse prototypes, data, usability, and tolerances. But sometimes the only way of creating a part is to take something apart, with a view to rebuilding it better. Reverse engineering can on occasions be the only answer, to solving a technical question.
Having seen and done many things mechanical engineering related, we are able to use our experience and technical capabilities, solving a variety of issues thrown upon us over the years. When I say we, I can clarify that it is not just me, there are a number of technical engineers supporting Sanstec Design and providing the subsequent services mentioned in this blog. One man and his CAD; I’m an engineer, what’s your superpower?
