The story of engineering, if condensed into one book, would be vast. The pages would be jam-packed with descriptions of creatives and visionaries, who, despite experiencing adversity, had the passion and drive to continue with their individual inventions, ideas and projects. The list of these influential people who have gone before, is endless. But it is thanks to the likes of James Watt, George Stevenson, Nikola Tesla, Charles Babbage, Ada Lovelace, and so many others, that present day engineers, such as myself, with our computers, CAD software, AR and AI, can continue to bring you the new latest ‘thing’.
The field of engineering is huge. There are many different aspects and strands, such as civil, automotive, industrial, structural, mechanical, or electrical, each specialism having its own set of skills. A whole host of bright professional minds, who, in their own way, will be looking to change the world. One of the latest engineers to hit the headlines is Elon Musk, who appears to not only aim to do just that, but to visit new ones through space exploration.
So, is our story going to conclude with a ‘happy ever after’? With respect to engineering, instead of an ending, there is likely to be a continuous process of evolution, as naturally, humans are always striving, and moving forward. Whilst we acknowledge there will always be ups and downs, breakthroughs and barriers to overcome, I, for one, am looking forward to reading the contents of the next chapter.
