So it was hot, really hot! During last week's record-breaking heatwave, members of the press, media and weather forecasters were talking about climate change and the fact that we will need to get used to higher summer temperatures and more records being broken. Some of us were considered lucky to be working in air conditioned offices, while others like delivery drivers and the bin men were trying to carry on as business as almost usual. With never-before-seen temperatures, the kindness of the general public to those who had to brave the heat, resulted with cold drinks being provided both on doorsteps and in the street. In contrast though, it is sadly worth reflecting that the use and dependency on mechanical cooling will only exasperate the climate issue.
It is indeed very concerning that a two-day heatwave can cause so much havoc with our travel infrastructure and I am thankful that I didn’t have anywhere urgently to be, other than in the Sanstec office. My thoughts however turned to those manufacturing companies who were trying to get orders out of the door and other fellow mechanical design engineers, in the process of developing new products to be introduced to the marketplace later in the year. Stay cool and safe out there everyone!
