Here’s the Thing…

Sometimes, one of the very first phrases I hear when taking on a new mechanical design engineering project, is “here’s the thing”. This is the moment you know that you are going to receive details of the engineering problem to be solved. The project, often named as ‘x’ or something more obscure, is used for those more highly confidential development products. Maybe as yet unbranded or named, it is up to the research and development (R&D) team to develop the ‘thing’ into a bona fide product, to manufacture and sell to the end consumer.

Throughout the development process, the illusive ‘project x’, should grow and mature into something more tangible and saleable. I say should, because not all new products actually take off. On many occasions, once they begin to be developed, and the detail is expanded and explored, it becomes apparent that, in reality, it is simply not going to be feasible to continue.

For those projects that do survive this stage, the somewhat countless CAD drawings and data corresponding to all components aids to complete this journey. At the project’s conclusion, the fully developed prototype is no longer just considered ‘the thing’ but has blossomed into a fully functional branded product, ready to be marketed and sold.
