A Smooth Move: The logistics of packing up

Moving; never underestimate what is involved. That’s why many of us put it off, unless for whatever reason, it becomes a necessity. As the date looms to vacate the Sanstec workshop to a new premises, we have been busy preparing for as smooth a move as is practically possible.

Providing a mechanical design engineering service for many years now puts us in a great position to manage our own move, in terms of being fully aware of the whole picture but at the same time being prepared to drill down and focus on the detail, however minute. So we have therefore treated this relocation of our workshop in a similar way as we would any other Sanstec Design engineering project.

We subsequently begun by preparing the layout of the new workshop in CAD. This meant that we could accurately design in advance, where everything would and could go. This included the positioning of obvious items such as our cars, work bench, tools and racking system, but also the placement of the lighting and electrical sockets formed part of the 3D CAD layout and subsequent drawings for contractors too. The latter items being really important as we naturally require both suitable lighting and an electrical supply to be very close at hand.

As like any other design project, we are managing the logistics by prioritising what needs doing first and ordering tasks, functions and deadlines by when they need to be accomplished. We have even devised a numbering system for our packing boxes which have all been colour coded, allowing us to categorising them, to aid the unpacking activity and continued storage the other end and hopefully result in a smooth move.
